The Davidson Institute for Talent Development is collecting social media resources for gifted education. It is a valuable list of Facebook pages, Twitter accounts, blogs and other online resources for anyone interested in giftedness.
Speaking of social media, Meredith Warshaw of Uniquely Gifted (a terrific online resource for gifted children with special needs) recently linked on Facebook to a fun Star Wars video that you might enjoy. Just recently I had a conversation with my college sophomore son about movies. The university he attends, having bought out tickets for one screen. bused students to a midnight showing of the new Harry Potter movie.
While I also very much enjoy the HP movies and books, his memory of the movies will be something qualitatively different, a shared experience with his generation that younger children and older adults are not privy to, not really. We also talked about Toy Story 3, which I saw only recently on DVD, and how, while the first movie was, in some ways, written for my generation (oh, the nostalgia at seeing the Barrel of Monkeys and Mr. Potato Head!), the third movie was written for my son’s generation, for whom the original Toy Story may have been their first theater experience and who now feel a tug-of-war between growing into adulthood and wanting to hang on to their childhood… toys and all.
So, I wonder, what is the current movie for our generation?
Well, it’s not a movie, but this Star Wars “Service Announcement” hits the mark and brings back the memory of sitting in a small town theater long ago and far away in the summer of 1977, being completely entranced as a large, dark spaceship filled the screen and took me to somewhere I had never been before:
