I was thrilled to learn that Jamie Oliver, Britain’s “Naked Chef,” has won a 2010 Ted Prize!
I first learned of Jamie’s work through the television series Jamie’s Kitchen, the DVD of which my son and I found in our library a few years ago. The one-season show follows a group of 15 disadvantaged young Londoners as Jamie trains them to be chefs in his new restaurant created just for them: Fifteen. It’s reality television without mean spiritedness.
His latest campaign is “Food Revolution,” based on his belief that “every child in America has the right to fresh, nutritious school meals, and that every family deserves real, honest, wholesome food.”
An interesting side note is that Jamie is dyslexic, was at the bottom of his group in school, and left school at age 16. Read a candid interview 2004 interview in The Guardian.
Jamie’s Web site features recipes, information about his causes and restaurants, and fun videos.
